James Newell of Old Hickory, TN arrived at Road America for his rookie appearance at the SCCA Runoffs with a simple plan: learn fast, qualify well, and race smart.
He started the Spec Miata final from fifth. Over the closing laps he worked forward, took the lead, and crossed the line 1.071 seconds clear of the field to claim the 2026 Spec Miata championship in car #23.
